All New Mahindra Thar

After lots of testing and waiting, Mahindra has finally unveiled the All-New Mahindra Thar in its full glory. What a great day to showcase an offroading icon on the 74th Independence Day to cheer up all the fans across the country.

As claimed by Mahindra with the New Gen Thar they not only want to focus on the hardcore off-roading fans but also want to make it a more friendly everyday drive by reaching out to the new generation. No wonder by looking at the spec list the New Thar looks like a well-made recipe for both off and on-road with the modern-day creature comforts and well equipped mechanical bits and safety features. Read on to know more.

New Gen Mahindra Thar Design

The design team at Mahindra worked really well to bring up the New Thar and undoubtedly it retains the iconic design of its predecessor way back from the Mahindra’s Classic 4×4. Retains the old school Round Headlamps, 7 slot grille, Squared tail lamps, large wheel arches with a high profile all-terrain tyres- all upgraded to give the SUV a modern look.

No wonder it looks more or less like the Jeep Wrangler as both shared the same heritage. Also, the New Thar has similar Dimensions like the Wrangler. It now features LED DRLs up front and gets a new dual-tone bumper. Also, the rear tail lamps are similar in design to that of the Wrangler and are all new LED units.

The New Thar is built upon an all-new ladder-on frame chassis which is more rigid than before. Mahindra has equipped the Thar with many new bits that we will be discussing later but for now it features independent coil spring both front and rear ditching the rigid leaf spring setup from the previous generation. This makes the New Thar more capable off-roader also provides much plush ride on tarmac.

New Gen Mahindra Interior

Mahindra with the New Gen Thar had the vision to make it more daily driver with compromising its off-road capabilities, and keeping that in mind the new Thar is offered with an all-new interior that’s modern and at the same time off-road friendly.

Features creature comforts like a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, roof-mounted weather-resistant speakers, a coloured TFT MID for the instrument cluster, reverse parking sensors, steering-mounted controls for stereo and phone, cruise control and power-folding ORVMs will be part of the package.

The rear seats now can be configured for forward-facing setup with 50:50 split configuration. On the safety front, the SUV is now equipped with dual airbags and ABS with EBD as standard across all variants (AX, AX Opt and LX variants), Isofix mounts, hill-start and descent control, HVAC Switch bank, also gets real-time monitoring of roll and pitch information, tyre pressure monitoring system, Cruise control, ESP with roll-over mitigation and three-point seatbelts for four passengers. Also now comes with an option to get a factory fitted hard top or soft top.

Powertrain and Transmission

The New Thar is offered with two new Engine options: The 2.0 litres mStallion Petrol motor and tried and tested 2.2 litres mHawk Diesel motor, both complying latest BS6 emission norms. The turbocharged mStallion Petrol engine produces 150 HP and 320NM of torque and will be offered with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard also an option for 6 speed automatic.

Mahindra claims the new Thar has an unladen ground clearance of 226mm, water-wading depth of 650mm, and approach, ramp-over and departure angles of 42 degrees, 27 degrees and 37 degrees, respectively that makes it more capable than before and it’s near to some premium off-orders like the Wrangler and the New Ford Bronco.
