McLaren Artura Plug-in-Hybrid supercar Overview

With brands moving toward electrification, the McLaren Artura is their latest supercar and the second plug-in-hybrid supercar from the British Car maker. It is powered by an all-new 3.0L twin-turbo V6 engine making 577HP and an additional 94HP electric motor. The car has an electric-only range of up to 31km and go up to speed of 130kph. It replaces every single character of the V8-engined Sports and Super Series models current sold as it is built on an all-new platfrom and gets a new design that shows how McLaren future models will look when it will move towards complete electrification. Even with supercar performance on tap, with the help of hybrid tech its combined fuel economy exceeds 17.7Kpl as claimed by McLaren.

While being a hybrid the Artura weighs just 27kg more than the amazing 720S. The additional weight comes from the new powertrain and that consists of a new V6, a electric motor and a 7.4kwh battery pack, all off these matted to a new 8-speed automatic gearbox. The hybrid components on it own weighs 130kgs but overall the engine is 49kgs lighter than the 3.8L V8 engine used in the super sports series and this shows McLaren’s extensive work to keep the car as light weight as possible.

Also, with Artura, McLaren is will leave behind its age-old custom of naming its cars with numbers and will come up with names instead.

McLaren Artura Powertrain details

The Artura is powered by an all-new 3.0L, 2,993cc twin-turbo V6 petrol engine which was built from scratch for this particular car as said bt the powertrain boss, Richard Jackson. The engine heads are made of aluminum and with a 120 degree the twin turbo could sit at the middle part. The V6 makes 577HP and 431 lb-ft or 584 Nm of torque on its own. The electric motor sits between the engine and the gearbox and makes 94HP and 166 lb-ft or 225Nm of torque. McLaren claims the total output of the system is 671 HP and 531 lb-ft or 720Nm of torque. The Artura also gets an all-new 8-speed transmission which is an upgrade from the 7-speed found on other models. The transmission sends power to the rear wheels via a new electronic limited slip differentail which is first for McLaren. It essesntially has torque vectoring fuction which will improve traction. The driver can also adjust the amount of slip angle in a drift via the Variable Drift Control setting in the central screen in the cockpit. However, the Artura does not have any mechanical reverse gear and uses the electric motor for reversing.

The electric motor incorporated here is also an state of the art ‘axial flux’ unit which can add assistance to the engine or power the car all by itself. There is a 7.4-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that powers the motor and weighs 88 kgs which is placed under the rear of the passenger compartment for better weight distribution. McLaren claims it takes 2.5-hour for 80% charge and can provide electric only range of 31kms under European Testing norms.

McLaren Artura Chassis, Design and Dimensions

The Artura is based on McLaren’s all-new MCLA (McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture) that has a central carbonfibre tub which is much lighter and stronger than the one used before in previous McLarens, it gets aluminium crash beams at front and rear, and a rear aluminium subframe that supports the engine and rear suspension components.

The It terms of design its new but gets design cues from other McLaren models. The has length almost same as the as the more expensive 720S. It is  4,500mm in length and is actually 0.2 inch longer, but with clean design and less aggressive aerodynamic bits it looks shorter. Has a witdth of 2,000mm and 2,640mm wheelbase and has 30mm less  than that of the previous cars giving it more agility. There are no active aerodynamics or any moving components on the body. The headlights are smaller than one on the 570S and which are ofcourse all-LED components. At the back, there are sleek LED taillights are placed in a laser-cut mesh grille that also accommodates twin exhaust pipes. The engine cover now gets chimney vent that helps in better cooling of the engine.

Its comes with carbon-ceramic brakes as standard, there are also adaptive suspension with McLaren’s Proactive Damping Control system. The Artura comes with conventional anti-roll bars rather than the linked hydraulic system of the brand’s more expensive cars.

The Artura being a hybrid has an impressive low kerb weight of 1,495kgs which is result of McLaren’s weight-saving campaign that began four years ago. As said by tje McLaren CEO, Mike Flewitt “Every drop of McLaren’s experience and expertise has been poured into Artura,” and its begining of a new era for McLaren future models.
