The Hyundai Elantra N has been finally revealed by the Korean carmaker, it is a performance oriented version of the Elantra along with its practicality. The Hyundai Elantra N shares most of its underpinnings with the Hyundai i30 N hot-hatch and in many coutries like Australia its even called the i30 Sedan. The car share body styling with 7th-Gen Hyundai Elantra sedan on which it is base on and that is yet to be launched in India.
- Hyundai Elantra N is powered by 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine making 280HP
- Can go from 0-100 kph in just 5.3sec in N Grin Shift mode or launch control
- Has a top speed of 250Kph
- Gets aerodynamic body kit, updated equipment and N performance kit
- Based on the 7th-gen Hyundai Elantra and shares its underpinnings with the Hyundai i30 N hot-hatch
Exterior and Interior Styling
The 7th-gen Elantra already features Hyundai’s new design language which is very edgy and sporty. And as such Hyundai didn’t had to make any radical changes to the design for the N Model. However, its gets heavily reworked bumpers with larger grille and intake vents, a new aggressive front splitter, blacked out elements, side skirts. At the rear there is a fixed rear wing finished in black and a diffuser element on the new rear bumper finished of with twin exhaust tips. The low ride height also adds to it sporty stance and its a very good looking car to the eyes. The window area gets a gloss black finish. Other exterior styling bits includes large 19-inch bespoke lightweight alloy wheels that are wrapped in Pirelli PZero rubber.
Coming to the interior of the Elantra N, in terms of layout it is similar to the standard Elantra, but since it is a N model there are addition of N specific elements. The most visible upgrade is the N model-specific steering wheel with added controls, updated infotainment system that now displays performance oriented informations like torque and turbo pressures as well as oil and coolant temperatures, it comes standrad with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Hyundai Connected Car technology. The fully digital instrument cluster now features sportier graphics and a dedicated lap timer. The seats are upgraded with sports type seats, there are also optional front bucket seats that sits 10mm lower for added sportiness.
Hyundai Elantra N Powertrain and performance
Coming to the powertrain, the Hyundai Elantra N is powered by a 2.0L, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that also does duty on other N performance cars like the i20 N, i30 N and the Kona N, the engine is tuned in different states for every car. On Elantra N, this engine is equipped with a 5mm larger turbo that helps it make 276HP and 392Nm of torque as standard. It comes mated to either an 8-speed wet DCT or a 6-speed manual gearbox that drives the front wheels.
Being a performance Sedan there are drive modes on offer– N Grin Shift, N Power Shift, and N Track Sense Shift – and just like in other N models with DCTs these modes can be engaged with two large N buttons mounted on the steering wheel. When engaged in N Grin Shift mode with launch control, the turbo boost pressure is increased and that increases the power output up to 285HP, which in turn helps the Elantra N to go from 0-100 kph in just 5.3 seconds. Also comes equipped with electronic limited-slip differential which Hyundai calls as ‘N Corner Carving Different.’
Hyundai has also used their WRC expertise on the Elantra N and equipped it with WRC-inspired integrated drive axle that integrates the drive shaft, wheel hub and the bearing, helping it reduce weight by 1.7kgs and also helps in improving the lateral grip. To further increase the performance, the Elantra N is also equipped wih electronically-adjustable suspension that works along with a dual-compound trailing arm bush to optimise the ride and handling and helps minimising NVH levels. The braking is taken care with 360mm discs all around with N performance calipers and brake pads. To help with cooling the brakes there are cooling ducts on the front fascia with brake air guides.
Hyundai has also equipped some electronic gizmos in the Elantra N called the N Sound Equalizer feature that artificially brings in engine sound into the cabin and is programmed to even produce sound of a TCR race car. The feature offers a host of adjustability and can be tuned for the whine, throat and bass through the equaliser. However, being a N Model the Elantra N features a real variable exhaust system that can make cracks and pops with press of button just other Hyundai N models.
Hyundai N Performance Avialability and India Launch
At present, Hyundai has no plans of bringing any of its full-blown N performance models to India. And as with Elantra N, Hyundai is still selling the older generation of standard Elantra Sedan in India. But just like we reported earlier, Hyundai has plans to debut N performance brand in India with a few N Line models starting with i20 N Line which has already been seen testing on our roads It is expected to make its debut in coming months this year itself.
For US markets it is expected to start at a price of $35,000 that will make it considerably cheaper than other performance sedans and hot hatch at this segment.
