2021 Hyundai Kona N Unveiled for the Global Market

Hyundai has unveiled the 2021 Hyundai Kona N for the global market and it’s the high-performance version of the standard Kona SUV. The Hyundai Kona SUV is the fifth Hyundai model to get the high-performance N variant after i20, i30, i30 fastback and Veloster hatchbacks. The carmaker also announces that it will expand the N and N-Line range to 18 models by the year 2022. While in India the Hyundai Kona SUV is offered only as an EV the global market gets the petrol-powered SUV and a higher spec N Variant. Keep reading to know more about the Hyundai Kona N

2021 Hyundai Kona N Exterior styling

 

The N-badged Hyundai models always speak about performance and Hyundai has done a lot with the Kona N to keep it true to its name. The exterior has updated design elements when compared to the standard Kona N and features functional aero kit like the front splitter, side skirting, rear spoiler and diffuser, there are also blacked out grilles and meshes and a wider track for better grip. The exterior also features working dual exhaust tips and red coloured N-badged brake callipers. It is also offered in an exclusive colour scheme of Sonic Blue which is inspired by the N sub-brands trademark Blue. The colour scheme is also used to highlight various accents on the interior.

 

2021 Hyundai Kona N Interior features

 

Hyundai has also made many updates for the Kona N SUV’s interior. It gets an updated infotainment screen. When the N mode or Sport mode is selected, the 10.25-inch touchscreen and digital instrument cluster show lap times, circuit maps and other driving-related information in a very sporty video game type manner.

 

Some other features over the standard Kona SUV include a head-up display, an N sport steering wheel wrapped in premium materials with two customizable N buttons for various functions, Alcantara inserts in the cabin, and new sport seats for better comfort and grip. There are also N logos placed all over the interior, like on the gear shift knob, steering wheel, hand brake, door scuff, and seats.

 

2021 Hyundai Kona N Powertrain details

 

The Hyundai Kona N under the hood is powered by a 2.0L four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that makes 280HP and 392NM of torque and power goes to the front wheels Hyundai N DCT with is an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The gearbox offers 3 different modes of which the first mode is called N Power Shift that gets engaged when the throttle input exceeds 90%. It works in a way that there is no loss of torque during upshifts and provides a smooth acceleration curve. The next mode is the N Grin Shift, which when engaged gives a 20sec burst performance by downshifting to the right gear. However, this can only be used every 40sec and will be useful on track or will be helpful while overtaking on roads. The final mode is N Track Sense Shift is optimised for track use and helps the driver with better gear changes on the track for quicker lap times.

 

The Hyundai Kona being a heavy SUV and weighing 1,510kgs can do a 0-100kph in 5.5sec with launch control engaged and can reach a top speed of 240kph are some quite impressive numbers.

 

2021 Hyundai Kona N mechanical updates

 

The Hyundai Kona N runs of 19-inch lightweight forged alloy wheels which are wrapped with bespoke Pirelli P Zero tyres for superior grip. It also gets updated brakes over the standard model for better braking performance. For added stability around the corners and strength, Hyundai has also reinforced the body and the chassis so it performs well on the tracks. The Hyundai Kona N being a front-wheel-drive SUV comes with an electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD) at the front diff which helps reduce understeer and wheel slip and gives driver confidence around the corners. The electronically assisted steering wheel is also tuned to provide accurate and precise feedback. The Kona N also gets electronically adjustable sports suspension which can be softened or stiffened up as required with the push of a button.

 

Every Hyundai Kona N models will come standard with launch control, multimode gearbox and variable exhaust valves for better performance.

 

Will Hyundai bring the Kona N to India?

 

As of now, Hyundai has not made any announcements to bring in the performance-focused Kona N to India. However, Hyundai is considering introducing its N-line sub-brand in India starting with the launch of the i20 N-Line by mid-2021. They are also working to bring in the full-blown i20 N hot hatchback. Hyundai offers only the Kona Electric SUV in India with prices ranging from Rs 23.76-23.95 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
