2020 Mahindra Thar scores an impressive four-star for both adult occupant and child occupant protection rating in the Global NCAP crash test making it one of the safest Indian 4×4 car.
2020 Mahindra Thar in its 2nd generation avatar has scored an impressive four-star rating at Global NCAP‘s #safercarsforindia crash test program.
- 2020 Mahindra Thar scores four-star Global NCAP safety rating for both Adult and Child occupants.
- Passed Side-impact crash test.
- Also passed the Global NCAP’s ESC test.
Coming to the scores, the New 2020 Mahindra Thar scored 12.52 points out of 17 for Adult Occupants. The Head and Neck area protection for both adult crash dummies proved to be good. The Chest protection for the driver was rated adequate and for the co-driver it was good. While reports shows that it has good knee protection for co-driver but for driver protection is marginal as there may be contact with some structures behind the dashboard in an event of an accident. The bodyshell structure was rated as stable but the footwell area was rated as unstable in the reports.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar also showed great result on the Child Occupants safety front. The Thar is given Four-Stars and 41.11 points out of 49 points by Global NCAP which is highest score for any Indian car tested till now. Even the Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV 300 and Tata Altoz with full five-stars for Adult Occupants scored only 3 stars for Child Occupants.
The New Mahindra Thar with the recommended child restraint system (CRS) movement of the three-year-old child crash dummy’s head (sat in a forward-facing child seat) was within Global NCAP’s 550mm limit. The Thar provided good head protection for both three-year-old as well as the 18-month-old child dummy (sat in a rear-facing child seat).
Global NCAP in its report also highlights about the features that comes in the Mahindra Thar like the three-point seat belts as standard for all passengers and also standard ISOFIX child-seat anchorage, that helped it gain a four-star protection rating not just for adult occupants but also for child occupants.
Global NCAP also carried the side impact crash test on the Mahindra Thar which it passed. A side impact test is mandatory for a vehicle which is taken into consideration for a Five-star rating, but it wasn’t considered in the final score as the Thar didn’t score enough points in the frontal offset crash test to get a five-star rating.
Why Mahindra Thar LX Top-trim was tested?
According to Global NCAP’s norms or policy it usually takes into consideration the base model of the vehicle as seen in the past but with the new Mahindra Thar the top-trim Mahindra Thar LX with hardtop was used for crash test and rating. Here we explain you why it was done.
Global NCAP mentioned the same reason when it tested the Tata Altroz and the XUV300 that most safety features are common across all variants of the new Thar and the top trim LX with higher weight and Alloy wheels which are much stronger than steel wheels would case more impact on the strutcure during an accident. So with some safety features becoming common now, it certainly seems that Global NCAP is making changes with its usual policy of only considering the entry-level models and now take the variant that it thinks might face more challenge in the tests.

Global NCAP also tested the Thar’s ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and the feature is offered only on the LX variants of the New Mahindra Thar. In its test of the ESC, Global NCAP in the reports said that the Thar “showed unstable behavior” and needs improvement over the ESC of the car, but overall the feature was helpful.
With this said the result will help to boost Mahindra’s image in the Indian car market and that the New Mahindra Thar now will become a much promising product for the brand.
