2020 Mahindra Thar Launched at Rs 9.80 Lakh


All-New 2020 Mahindra Thar launched in India with price starting at Rs 9.80 lakh for the base petrol variant with a manual transmission.

From the table above we can see that the base AX trim comes with both a petrol-manual version (at Rs 9.80 lakh) and a diesel-manual version ( Rs 10.65-12.65 lakh). It is focused on off-road enthusiasts at is fairly basic in terms of some features like it gets steel wheels, a soft-top, a mechanical locking differential, dual front airbags, and for safety a roll cage as standard. But these are the things which is essential for off-roading.

The top trim level of Thar – the LX is focused mainly on the urban driving condition so comes with a number of additional creature comfort features like larger, 18-inch alloy wheels, you get the choice of a hard-top or convertible soft-top, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system and an option for both automatic and manual gearbox. But it has got better off-road equipment than the base AX Trim.

The Thar LX petrol-auto (there is no option for Petrol manual in LX Trim as of now) is priced at Rs 12.49 lakh, while the diesel variants start from Rs 12.85-14.01 lakh.



Engine and gearbox


There are many changes that has been made for the 2020 Mahindra Thar. The most important and biggest change is the engines and gearbox options available. Now the Thar comes with both petrol and diesel engine options. The mStallion petrol engine is a 2.0-litre 4 cylinder turbocharged unit produces 152hp and 300Nm(320Nm with the auto transmission).

The mHawk diesel engine is a 2.2-litre 4 cylinder turbocharged unit produces 132hp and 300Nm.

Both engines get options for either a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission. Thar gets a 4×4 system and a manual-shift transfer case with a low ratio as a standard fitment across all variants.


Availability and Deliveries


Mahindra will begin deliveries of the all-new Thar by end of October as per dealer sources says.

Interestingly, Mahindra held an online auction for the Thar’s first unit with #1 and said all proceeds from the auction will go for the fight against Covid-19. The first unit of the Thar ended up with a bid of Rs 1.11 Crore and won by Mr. Akash Minda.
