The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) of India has again constructed a new road which now hold the title for the highest motorable road in the world at Umling La Pass of Eastern Ladakh, its much more higher than Khardung La which earlier was the benchmark in India. The road constructed is at a height of 19,300ft above sea level and measures 52Kms in length.

Umling La Pass
Border Roads Organisation (BRO) constructed road at Umling La Pass takes the title for the highest motorable road in the world measuring at an altitude of 19,300 feet from the sea level. Earlier the title was hold by the road in Bolivia which connects to the Uturuncu volcano, at an altitude of 18,953 feet and before that the Khardung La Pass in Leh, at an altitude of 17,582 feet was said to be the highest motoring road.
The newly constructed road through is at an altitude higher than the Mount Everest Base Camps and for reference the South Base Camp in Nepal is at 17,598 feet above sea level and the North Base Camp in Tibet is at 16,900 feet above sea level. The new road is even higher than the Siachen Glacier itself which is at an altitude of 17,700 feet.
This new road through Umling La now connects important reasons and towns of Chumar sector of Eastern Ladakh and also offers a direct route connecting Chisumle and Demchok from Leh both for the locals and other people. The road is also constructed with the motive to enhance the socio-economic condition and promote tourism in Ladakh, it will also help the Army to transport supplies and ferry troops to the camps in the region. The road constructed in the Umling La Pass is a remarkable feat of engineering carried out by the Border Roads Organisation.
