Top 7 Fastest and most powerful Hot hatchbacks in India before BS6 Emission Norms

Here’s a list of top 7 fastest and most powerful hot hatchbacks in India but sadly these budget performance cars got discontinued due to low sales and also with BS6 norms coming into play but still are a good bargain in the pre-owned market.

Fiat Abarth Punto:

Launched in 2015, at a price of Rs 9.90 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi, Fiat Abarth Punto is one of the hottest hatchbacks in the country. Abarth, a racing car maker founded by an Italian-Austrian man called Carlo Abarth in 1949, they started with fine-tuning of Fiat cars to racing specs. The main highlight of the Punto Abarth is its engine, a 1.4 litre 1368 cc 16 valve petrol engine that develops 145 hp of power at 5,500 rpm. The car does not get an automatic transmission and is offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox only, which is quite rubbery and doesn’t compliment the vehicle’s character but who doesn’t love a manual with a powerful engine as it gives out the best driving experience. The Abarth Punto features the iconic Scorpio emblem and badging as well as graphics, side skirting, and contrasting decals on the sides that make it stand out. The 16-inch sporty alloy wheels make the car look more sporty and goes well with the whole car’s design.
But sadly one cant buy a brand new Punto Abarth because Fiat India has officially halted its production with BS6 emission norms coming to effect. But this is the car you buy with your heart, not your head, and still potentially a good bargain in the preowned market.

Volkswagen Polo GT TSI:

Probably one of the best built hot hatchback in this list is the VW Polo GT TSI. The Polo GT TSI is a peppier version of the five-door Polo and gets more power but not much styling changes over the standard Polo. Under the bonnet, the Polo and Polo GT TSI get a 1.2 litre turbocharged, direct-injection TSI petrol unit. The engine develops a healthy output of 103 hp and 175 Nm of torque. The Volkswagen Polo GT TSI is the only hatchback that is available with a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. Sadly the newly launched POLO TSI gets a manual only option but a more refined 1.0 litre TSI motor with slightly more power and torque.
The Polo GT TSI delivers a claimed fuel economy of 17.21 kmpl, which is good for its positioning and target consumer. The Polo GT TSI was priced at Rs 9.15 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi, which is competitive considering the kit it offers.
VW also offered POLO GT TDI which is the diesel version of the GT petrol and is powered by a 1.5 litre turbocharged unit that produces 109 hp of power and is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The engine gets an aluminium cylinder head that reduces the weight of the car and delivers an ARAI-certified fuel-efficiency of 19.9 kmpl. The design and styling of the Polo GT TDI are largely the same as the standard Polo, but gets a new grille, bumper, headlamps and fog lamps with cornering lights. The rear also has revised design. The cabin has received more changes than the exterior such as dual-tone interior, all-black interior, door sills with silver-finished GT badging and aluminium pedals, giving it a sporty appeal.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS:

Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS is a sportier and more powerful version of the Baleno, launched in March 2018 at a price of Rs 8.69 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. Unlike the first-gen Baleno RS which had just cosmetic changes, the later RS was equipped with an all-new engine and a revised suspension setup. The Baleno RS is powered by Suzuki’s 1-litre three-cylinder Boosterjet engine, that produces 100 hp and 150 Nm of peak torque. All this power was sent to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission and there was no option for any automatic. Also disc brakes were put on all four wheels. It had claimed ARAI fuel economy of 21.1 kmpl and all thanks to its lightweight of 950 kg. The cabin mostly remained unchanged from the regular Baleno and the exterior featured small tweaks on front and rear bumpers, side skirts and blacked-out R-15 alloys.
Sadly due to its high pricing than the regular Baleno, it couldn’t make much of an impact also with the BS-6 emission norms coming to play Maruti Suzuki decide to discontinue it on 2020.

Ford Figo S:

In 2017 Ford also offered a sportier version of its best hatchback, the Figo S that offers a better handling characteristic to the premium hatchback. The Ford Figo S is based on the Titanium variant and is powered by the same 1.2 litre petrol and the 1.5 litre diesel engines that is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The performance figures of the car remains similar to its sibling, however, it gets slightly reworked suspension setup along with larger 15-inch alloy wheels and wider 195/55 section tyre. This improves the handling of the hatchback without compromising on the ride quality. Ford has also not equipped the Figo S with chrome inserts but gets silver accents on the side with S badging and at the rear bumper. There are lots of black elements on the exterior such as the all-black honeycomb mesh grille, blacked-out wheels, ORVMs and also smoked headlamps. The cabin largely remains unchanged however, minor changes include contrasting stitching on the gear lever, seats and leather-wrapped steering.

Tiago JTP:

Saving for the last and also one of my favourite in the list is the Tata Tiago JTP which is the performance-oriented Tiago and an indigenous product.  When launched its Ex-showroom price was Rs.6,69,990.

JT Special Vehicles Pvt. Ltd. is a joint venture between Tata Motors and Jayem Automotives Pvt. Ltd. for the development of special performance vehicles based on the latest Tata Motors products. Under the brand JTP, JTSV works on performance enhancement and appearance of Tata Motors vehicles to offer an exciting and innovative range of aspirational products in the passenger car segment.
It was built to race and that’s how its makers describe about this peppy small car. The Tiago JTP is built not only to smoke the streets but also to have fun around track sometimes. Capable of 0-100 km/h in 10 seconds, this Tata has the DNA of a true hot hatchback. Under the hood is a modified 1.2L turbocharged new-gen Revotron engine delivering 114 PS power and 150 Nm torque by JTP itself that helps it achieve 0-100 km/h in 10 secs, also the off-set hood opening actually is functional. All this power is transferred to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission with optimised gear ratios for delivering most of the engine’s power to the tarmac.
With perfectly tuned suspension and nicely calibrated electric power-assisted steering results in superior control. This is complemented with lower ride height and wider tyres for improved grip on the tarmac. Also equipped with a twin-barrel sporty exhaust that really sounds sweet on this Tata. Sadly again with BS6 norms coming to play and Covid-19 lockdown, Tata motors will discontinue it making it even a more crazy bargain for the Enthusiasts.

So in my view, these are some of the top fastest hot hatchbacks in the B+ segment which makes a great value for money buy as a pre-owned car.
