Nissan Z Proto Revealed: Gets retro styling with a new twin-turbo V6 and manual transmission.

Nissan Z Proto (Prototype of 400Z)

  • The Nissan Z Proto is a retro-styled concept of the 400Z Fairlady which will be launched by spring 2021.
  • Gets iconic Z styled retro styling with a modern take to celebrate 50 years of Nissan Z Sports car.
  • Gets a twin-turbo V6 expected to produce 400HP and mated to a manual gearbox
  • The successor to a decade-old Nissan 370 Coupé.

For 12 long years, the Nissan Z line up has not seen any major updates and in terms of car years that’s quite a long time. The Current Nissan 370Z was introduced way back in 2009 and it has not seen any major update as of now and to be honest people kind of forget about it for some time. But as the Z lineup is part of Nissan’s DNA, they got back to the drawing board and created the New Nissan Z Proto, successor to the Nissan 370Z. With the reveal of this new prototype, Nissan celebrates 50 years of the Z lineup cars. And that’s some great news for the Nissan Fanboys.

Some of the details that we can see in the prototype – like the retro styling, modern interior design, the drivetrain – should all make their way to the production model. The production model is expected to be launched by 2021 and what we believe will be called the Nissan Fairlady 400Z. Nothing much can be said on that and all we can now do is have a glimpse over the Fairlady.

Drivetrain: Engine and Performance

Under the hood, the new Nissan Z Proto gets a 3litre twin-turbo V6 engine. Since the car is a concept, actual power figures are not yet revealed. But sources say that it can be the same motor used in Infiniti Red Sport models and if that is true then expect a power output over 400 horsepower.

If that happens that the new Z gets a huge upgrade over the current 370Z, and makes it a direct rival to the new Toyota Supra- that produces around 382HP(which is basically a BMW with Toyota Skin) also against few American Icons like the Ford Mustang GT and Chevy Camaro SS.

The new twin-turbo V6 is paired to a six-speed manual transmission and all the power is transferred to the rear wheels. The braking department is taken care of by six-piston front and four-piston rear brake calipers borrowed directly from the flagship GT-R. Nissan says that an automatic transmission is also in development for a better market grasp.

Nissan Z Proto Design

The new Z Proto is one of the best Retro-inspired cars lately. The design is so well executed that the single-car has elements from every single Z cars from the past.

On the exterior, the bright yellow paint job is a subtle homage to first-gen Datsun 240Z, while the elongated hood which is a classic Japenese, the LED headlights, and squared grille takes ques from all other Z cars. It also gets a Fairlady Z

badge on the boot.

With that said the Z Proto’s back is the most appealing area to look at, with a black partition that runs along the length of the trunk lid hiding horizontal LED taillights underneath. That particular piece draws design inspiration straight from the ’90s 300ZX.

But not everything is retro, it even got lightweight materials like carbon fibre both on the exterior and interior.  Bits like the front lower lip, side skirts and the rear diffuser with twin exhausts are all made up of carbon fibre to make it as sporty as possible.

Even the body itself sits on lightweight 19-inch bronze wheels which are wrapped in custom Nissan Z branded tyres.

Dimension wise the Z Proto has grown bigger than the current 370Z in terms of length and width. The new Z stretches out to 172.5 inches in length, 72.8 inches in width, and is 51.6 inches tall while the 370Z is 167.5 inches long, 72.6 inches wide, and 51.8 inches tall.

The Z Proto on the interior has a different take and features a  totally clean and modern design, unlike the exterior. The interior features a large 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that replaces the currents models analogue gauge. The centre part of the dash also features a brand new touch screen display with Nissan’s latest Infotainment system that are found on modern Nissan Cars. Also there are three analogue gauges at the top on the dash.

The three-spoke steering wheel is covered in Alcantara and wears the “Z” logo sporting multiple controls on either side.

The seats have a mix of Alcantara and leather, with yellow stitching that carries over to the steering wheel, gear shift knob and center console area to give it more up-market feel.. Like its predecessor it only has two seats.

Pricing And Availability

In terms of pricing, Nissan may price it competitive starting around $40000, to make it more accessible than its direct rival the Toyota Supra. The Nissan Z Proto is a concept now but sources say that the production version will show up by spring of 2020 and will be sold as 2022 model in American Market first. More details like horsepower and the car’s starting price will be revealed once the production model gets launched.

In India the Nissan 370Z was introduced in 2010 but was discontinued in 2014. There is no official news that Nissan will bring the new 400Z to India.
