The Land Rover Defender was able to score full 5-star ratings in the latest round of crash and safety tests by Euro NCAP.

  • Scored 5-star ratings for both Adult and Child occupants.

  • The test was done on the larger Defender 110.

  • The test results are applicable for the Defender SUV sold in India as it is a CBU unit and the specs are similar to the International model.

  • The Land Rover Defender starts from Rs 79.94 lakh goes up to Rs 89.63 lakh (ex-showroom).

Although Euro NCAP crash and safety tests are much more stringent than Global NCAP test the Defender 110 was able to score some impressive number about which I have explained it in details, so keep reading.

Land Rover Defender Euro NCAP Crash test and safety rating.

The Land Rover Defender that was crash tested by the Euro NCAP is the five-door 110 model with a right-hand drive layout. It is the bigger and the most expensive Land Rover Defender. So this crash test is only applicable to the trim levels of the Defender 110 version. Also, the Land Rover Defender 110 sold in India is a CBU unit so the crash and safety ratings apply to the India version as well.

Now talking about the safety scores, the Defender 110 was able to score an impressive 85 percent rating in the Adult occupant protection test (got 32.5 out of 38 points). In this particular test, the Defender was able to score nicely in the lateral impact (got 15 out of 16 points), rear impact (got 3.8 out of 4 points) and rescue and extrication categories it was able to score full marks (got 2 out of 2 points). The only test that Defender 110 lost points was the frontal-impact test and scored  11.7 out of 16 points.

Now coming to Child Occupant safety, the Defender scored overall 85 percent again (got 41.7 out of 49 points). In the Crash Test of 6- and 10-year-old children category, the Defender was able to receive full scores (24 out of 24 points). Also, performed nicely in the child restraints (CRS) installation check and got 10.7 out of 12 points. But it lost some points on the safety features category (scored 7 of 13 points). The reason to that it the Defender 110 doesn’t have integrated child restraints and also it doesn’t come with child-seat mounting points in the middle seat of the second row and the third row. Hope these get improved in the upcoming versions.

In the vulnerable road users test the Defender was able to score 71 percent scoring 38.4 out of 48 points, here it was pointed out that the area of concern is the front edge of the bonnet that didn’t provide poor protection to pedestrians.

Lastly, in terms of the safety assist system category test the Land Rover Defender was able to score 79 percent which is 12.7 out of 6 points

What safety features does the Defender get?

In terms of safety features, the Land Rover Defender is equipped upto with the latest safety features which include six airbags, up to three ISOFIX mounting points, autonomous emergency-brakes, blind-spot monitoring assist, 360 degree and 3D camera, radar-based adaptive cruise control, driver condition monitor, lane keep assist, rear collision monitor and rear traffic monitor. These are some of the basic safety features and there are many more options Range Rover provides with the Defender SUV.

Drivetrain of the Land Rover Defender

The International Spec Land Rover Defender gets many engine and gearbox options. Also there is a plug-in hybrid version of the Defender that was recently launched called the Defender P400e Plug-in hybrid. Also there is option for 6 cylinder both petrol and diesel engine.

The Land Rover Defender 110 which is currently available and sold in India gets only a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder petrol engine which is good for 300 HP and 400 NM of torque. It is matted with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, also gets four-wheel drive and air suspension as standard on the Defender 110.

For India, the six-cylinder petrol and diesel engine options for the Defender may be introduce by next year. The British maker may take some more time to bring in the Plug-in hybrid version to India.

Land Rover Defender price

The Land Rover Defender 110 is launched in India and comes thorugh the CBU route in limited numbers so there is no doubt that the prices will be high. For the ‘Base’ trim, the price starts at Rs 79.94 lakh and the top-spec First Edition trim is priced at Rs 89.63 lakh both Ex-showroom pan India.

The smaller three-door variant called the Defender 90 will be introduced in 2021 by Land Rover. This particular variant has been globally delayed due to Covid-19 pandemic. But the Bookings have already started for the Defender 90. Its price starts from Rs 73.98 lakh and goes upto Rs 84.63 lakh Ex-showroom.
