2021 BMW M 1000 RR is the first-ever M Motorcycle from BMW Motorrad.
2021 BMW M 1000 RR is the first-ever motorcycle roll-out of the M-performance division with a whopping 212 HP engine.

BMW M-Division was always associated with high-performance sedans and coupes and recently came out with three new products, the M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe and for the first time a motorcycle, the BMW M 1000 RR. Though the grilles on the car were a letdown the motorcycle is business in every term be it looks and power. So let’s see what special M performance it has on offer.
Although the BMW S 1000 RR gets an M performance upgrade package like carbon wheels seats and electronically adjustable suspension but the 2021 M 1000 RR is built in-house in M-Division and gets an M Competition package in addition.
BMW M 1000 RR Design
In terms of design, the M 1000 RR shares most of the panels from the stock S 1000 RR on which it is based on which is already a sleek and good looking motorcycle out there.
The most noticeable difference between the two motorcycles are the new biplane carbon fibre winglets which are seen on Moto GP bikes and other high-performance motorcycles like Ducati, Aprilia and MV Agusta. And with M performance BMW Motorrad calls them the M-winglets which have been tested and developed exclusively using BMW Group’s wind tunnel and on a race track. The winglets provide a maximum downforce of 16.3kg at 186mph or 299kph which also reduces the risk of the bike to make an accidental wheelie while making hard acceleration.
Another advantage of having winglets is that it helps in stability by keeping the front wheel down on the tarmac and reduces the use of electronic traction control.
Another thing that make the M 1000 RR different from the regular motorcycle is the M paint scheme.
The M 1000 RR also gets a new, taller windscreen that will help reduce wind resistance and helps the rider tuck in at high speed along straight lines.
In terms of equipment, the motorcycle gets lots of electronics on offer from and the main highlight is a 6.5-inch TFT screen has a special starting animation with an M logo clearly states that it no regular BMW bike. Also gets other M performance pack more on that later.
2021 BMW M 1000 RR Engine
The BMW M 1000 RR features a 999CC engine like the S 1000 RR but it is now a totally new engine as M-Division has done a total overhaul on the 4 cylinder unit of S1000 RR.
It retains the BMW ShiftCam technology for the intake valve train but apart from that everything is new and better. The M 1000 RR inline-four cylinder engine gets forged pistons with two rings and each piston is lighter by 12 gms. The titanium connecting rods are 2mm longer and lighter, each weighs 89 gms. BMW has also used lighter rocker arms, revised the intake port geometry, used raised titanium exhaust valves, and the compression ratio is increased to 13.5:1. All these modifications result in a 5.5HP increase in power over the S 1000 RR motor and now redlines at 15,100 RPM from 14,600rpm on the S 1000 RR engine.
On paper, the M’s engine produces 212HP at 14,500 RPM and Max torque of 113NM at 11,000 RPM. The gearing too has been altered by adding one tooth on the rear sprocket to get a good initial acceleration and uses BMW’s maintenance-free chain.
The last improvement to on the powertrain is the uses of a lighter full titanium exhaust system from Akrapovic, this helped in losing 3.7 kg off the total weight, and that contributed towards performance.
The BMW M 1000 RR with all the changes and a better engine is 0.2 seconds faster to 100 KMPH and the 200 KMPH mark is achieved in 0.4s quicker than the standard S 1000 RR. The better-equipped electronics also helps the M 1000 RR to achieve this performance. It may not look much but on track 10th of second matters and it better show some great numbers out there.
With all this the bike now comes with M performance 4-piston Nissin Monoblock calipers at front and painted with blue M paint. This is by far the most advanced Nissin brake on a BMW motorcycle and comes all from the WorldSBK team experience.
Just like any other high-performance track bike The BMW M 1000 RR naturally gets lots of electronics aids. It five gets riding modes: Rain, Road, Dynamic, Race and Race Pro.
The ‘Race Pro’ mode has additional three levels of adjustment for tuning the IMU-based traction control and wheelie control settings also the engine brake settings for max performance in tracks.
It also gets launch control, bi-directional quick-shifter for clutchless upshifts and downshifts, Hill Start and a pit lane speed limiter as standard making it a proper track motorcycle.
Other types of equipment and Chassis
The M 1000 RR has great attention in every detail with very rich finishing and use of exotic materials like carbon fibre and high-quality billet aluminium. Standard equipment includes carbon fiber wheels while the footpegs, hand levers, and foot lever are machined billet aluminium.
The BMW M 1000 RR’s chassis is based on the S 1000 RR’s with the frame made of aluminium and its further improved and optimised. The steering geometry has been changed, with a flatter steering head angle at 66.4 degrees and reduced fork offset, by 3mm to 26.5mm. Also the wheelbase is increased from 1441mm to 1457mm, achieved by employing a longer and lighter swingarm. The pivot point of the swingarm can also be adjusted keeping in mind the need to adjust it geometry according to a race track.
To further lower the weight the wheels are now full carbon fibre which are 1.7 kg lighter than the S 1000 RR aluminium wheels. Even the regular Pro model gets carbon wheels as standard. This results in a kerb weight of 192kg. With this said BMW claims the motorcycle will have better agility and improved performance around the race track.
The M Performance Pack
For those adrenaline junkies and pro riders who think the regular M 1000 RR is not for them, they can opt for M Competition Package just like the M Competition Cars gets which provides many extra components and kits for the Motorcycle.
The list is as follows:
- An M GPS lap trigger software and the corresponding activation code.
- M machined parts package, the M carbon package as well as a 220 g lighter swingarm.
- BMW’s new DLC-coated, maintenance-free M-Endurance chain.
- The passenger package will get a tail-hump cover.
The M-performance package will cost an additional $5182 or Rs 3.82 lakh
Will all the performance and use of lightweight materials, BMW Motorrad has managed to keep the price of the M 1000 RR around quite well. Internationally it is priced at $39,150 or Rs 28.86 Lakh(without taxes). This is nearly double the price of standard S 1000 RR which is priced at $20,346.70 or Rs 15 Lakh(without taxes).
But compared to its direct rival the Ducati V4R which is priced at $44,613.54 or Rs 32.89 lakh(without taxes) the M 1000 RR seems quite a bargain.
